3 Tips for Coordinating Window Treatments and Flooring
Sometimes, we feel like our vision is too big for a space. We have inspiration boards, dog-eared home décor magazines, and a strong sense of the emotions we want our home to evoke when we spend time inside it. To do this, it often means revamping window treatments or flooring, but striking a balance between the two can seem daunting.

At Maple Drapery & Carpet, a flooring and window treatment store, we’ve been working alongside homeowners near Aurora and Newmarket, ON, for years to realize their design dreams.
Here are our three tips we’ve discovered that you can implement now to better coordinate your home’s window treatments and flooring.
1. Balance Visual Weight
Every element of your home has a colour, texture, and shape that contribute to its visual weight. It’s not something many homeowners consciously think about when decorating a space, but when the balance is off, you certainly notice.
To assess visual weight, consider:
- Focal Point: What is the focal point in the room? Is it a fireplace, or is it large, expansive windows? A boldly patterned area rug or even hardwood floors with a prominent grain?
- Colour Palette: Does one corner have several saturated elements? Does the colour gravitate toward one wall? Are accent colours evenly spaced throughout to create cohesion?
- Uniformity: Does your space feel balanced throughout, with high- and low-visual-weight items evenly distributed? Sometimes, we break this rule, but if cohesion is your top concern, then you’ll want to lean into balance and symmetry.
2. Use Contrast Meaningfully
Contrast is one of the design principles we rely on every day at Maple Drapery & Carpet, and it’s a great strategy for your home décor. Window treatments and flooring should work together. If both demand the same level of intensity, you create a distraction. The eye won’t know where to land.
If you love the look of rich, bold flooring, such as geometric or Moroccan patterns, or artistic materials like concrete or mixed wood, then let those serve as the statement and opt for more understated window treatments, like sheers or light-toned shades.
For fans of window treatments that resemble wall art or deco, try a style like Roman shades with structured pleats in a dark colour or patterned side panels. Complement these stylish window coverings with neutral hardwood or large-format tiles to keep the eyes forward.
3. Keep Undertones in Mind
Coordinating your window coverings and custom flooring doesn’t mean matching colours exactly everywhere throughout your home. Sometimes this has the opposite effect, making a room feel flat.
Instead, just as we recommend picking one focal point, choose one colour to base your décor on and stick to the same undertone. Warm wood floors often pair best with neutrals like creamy whites and soft beiges. Cooler floors, like grey-toned hardwood or tile, are better complemented by crisp whites and other soft neutrals, or patterned fabrics with cooler undertones.
